Setting boundaries: how to get it right

June 25, 2024

It’s always hits when it has gone wayyyy past too long. The feeling of overwhelm, stress, and a little frustration of “why do they keep coming to me for this?” when they should be able to figure it out on their own.

What is this moment, you ask? The moment when we realize we haven’t done the best job at setting boundaries with our teams, and it’s time to make a change.

This week’s episode of Managing Made Simple is a must-listen for anyone feeling overwhelmed by their team’s constant needs. You know what I’m talking about: whether it’s personal or work-related, your team comes to you for everything. Let’s tackle this head-on.

Boundaries in the workplace can sometimes feel like you’re drawing a line in the sand with your team. But trust me, it doesn’t have to be that way. From experience with both corporate leaders and business owners, I’ve noticed a recurring struggle: folks find themselves taking on too much because their team isn’t clear on what they should own. That changes today.

Here are three key takeaways from Episode 125:

1. Consider, where where is your zone of genius

Start by understanding your strengths and where you’re most impactful. Reflect on what tasks or responsibilities you need to focus on to grow your team and the business. When you’re clear on this, it becomes much easier to see what you can delegate.

2. Delegate with purpose

Empower your team by shifting some of your tasks to them, particularly those that align with their growth and career goals. This isn’t just about offloading work; it’s about building their leadership capacities. Clear expectations are crucial here. Explain why you are making these shifts and how they align with team members reaching their full potential.

3. Frame the conversation

When setting new boundaries, communicate from a place of support and growth. Explain how these adjustments will not only free you up to strategize and grow the business but will also highlight their work, setting them up for greater visibility and promotion opportunities.

Let’s be real, boundaries aren’t a one-and-done deal. They’re a habit you build over time. It may feel challenging initially, but you’ll find it gets easier and your team will begin to respect and embrace their roles more fully.
